Hamilton has scheduled what is being billed as a “steel summit” this September.

The event will outline the problems facing the industry, especially the impact that the 25 per cent tariff on steel, levied by the United States, is having on local companies, workers and the community, Ward 4 Coun. Sam Merulla said.

The summit, which was approved by city council on July 13, will be held no later than Sept. 26, and the estimated cost of the event is expected to be no more than $5,000.

“It is incumbent on us as a municipality to basically clear the air,” Merulla said. “We need to determine what exactly the problems are and what actually are the outcomes.”

The summit will include steel officials, workers, and local MPs and MPPs, as well as any member of the public willing to talk about the issue and how it could affect them.
